Close SeaWorld is an ongoing series by Rongwr0ng that reworks authentic vintage SeaWorld hats by embroidering the word “Close” on the front in light blue. This ‘Close’ graphic references the fashion brand Chloé’s logo. Each original hat is one-of-a-kind unless otherwise noted; some hats have ‘twins’, and have been drawn from a collection of hundreds of styles found that feature unique color palettes, appliqué embroidery, inlays, and stitching variations. While next to nothing is known of the original designers and exact reasoning behind such variety, it’s likely SeaWorld simply produced endless designs to appeal to as many customers as possible and maximize profit.
SeaWorld’s prioritization of profit over animal welfare, along with its exploitative breeding practices, have been well-documented. By reclaiming and altering these vintage hats, Rongwr0ng aims to amplify calls for the park’s closure and for its resources redirected toward genuine conservation work. To date, 50+ hats have been upcycled.
